4 Causes Of Stuttering In Children And Adults
👉 As a stuttering specialist, I want to share with parents and learners about the 4 main causes of stuttering:
👉 Stuttering caused by brain injury: Some people stutter due to brain injuries. For example, at the Vintalk stuttering treatment center, there are many cases of stuttering caused by brain injuries such as head injuries from falls, tree climbing accidents, or motorcycle accidents. Or in young children, head injuries from hitting hard objects can damage the Broca’s area, a region responsible for language, leading to stuttering.
👉 Stuttering caused by exposure to someone who stutters: In addition to the above cause, a factor contributing to 60% of stuttering cases is exposure to someone who stutters. While stuttering is not genetic, if someone is exposed to a person who stutters for a period of time, they may start to imitate the behavior. This can be intentional or unintentional. It’s similar to how if you’re from the North and you move to the South, you may unconsciously start to speak with a Southern accent, even if you don’t try to. Therefore, if there’s someone in your family who stutters, your stuttering could be due to imitation, either intentional or unintentional. This can lead to stuttering quite naturally without you even realizing it.
👉 Stuttering caused by speaking too fast: One of the causes of stuttering is speaking too quickly. People who speak too fast are more likely to stutter, especially with word repetitions. Speaking too quickly can disrupt your breath, articulation, and speed, leading to speech and communication difficulties. Many people ask me, “Will speaking slower help me stop stuttering?” While speaking slower can reduce stuttering to some extent, it’s not a complete solution. It’s just one of the factors that can contribute to smoother and easier communication.
👉 Stuttering caused by psychological stress: Some scientists believe that psychological stress or emotional trauma can contribute to stuttering. For example, a severe emotional shock or a traumatic event in childhood can lead to stuttering. Such events can trigger intense emotions and cause stuttering to develop. This is one of the most distressing causes of stuttering. According to Vintalk’s experience, psychological factors often play a significant role. Over time, stuttering can become a habit and make it more difficult to treat. It’s much more challenging to treat chronic stuttering compared to early-onset stuttering.
